Spireal Project

Official Website @ www.spireal.com

Spireal:

pronounciation: ’spire-al’
noun: A flat disc world carried through space by an elephant. Name derived from a giant spire rising from the central point of the world.

This part of Virio’s spiral documents my progress on Spireal.  An online game combining elements of MUDs , Rougelike and old style 2d top down RPG games.

In short MUDs are large communities of people who meet together in a text-driven virtual world and tend to like to roleplay and imagine fantasy worlds. Rougelikes are tiny computer games with graphics driven by tiled sprites (text or graphics) which use randomly generated dungeons to create infinitely repayable games. Both genres focus on gameplay over graphics.

The aim of Spireal is to attempt to create a game that combines best of both worlds while at the same time using 24bit 2d tile graphics and some technical wizardry to give the old-school 2d graphics a beautiful retro-artsy look.

Goals of Spireal:

  • Multiplayer game meant for anywhere from 20-100+ to play at once.
  • Graphicaly a ‘retro’ artsy look that mimics old 2d tile games but adds 24bit color for lighting effects etc.
  • Fun: Easy to get into, impossible to ‘master’, infinitely repayable.
  • Enjoyable: Playing is fun (never a chore) and rewards the user with rewards unique to them.
  • Community driven: Players constantly interact with each other and game rewards group effort.
  • Competitive: Either through the creative aspect, group interaction or through Player vs Player aspect.

Ha, Viri. Awesome. If you ever need the art man, like a told you years ago, I’ll do it.

  7. For those of you whom asked if they can help: You can :) Just look at the site and contribute where you’d like or can. Once the project gets off the ground a bit more everything except the world of Spireal is going to be Open Source/Public Domain.

I expect to update the site regularly with progress in terms of code, screen shots and designs/ideas so you can get a good idea of what the project is shaping up to be anytime.

  8. I looked at the initial stuff you had up when we talked a few weeks back, it looks great. Like I said in my email I’m interested to see how you blend the static game with the ‘instancing’ of the random dungeons. I’ll try to look at everything you’ve updated since. It’s nice to see some of the old folks prowling about as well.

    Hey Av!

    Anyway, talk to you soon.

    Mike
